Allan Ramsay’s Portrait of John Grey is displayed in the museum’s Gallery of European Art between 7 September and 1 November 2016.
Curator Mălina Conțu will explore the sitter’s posture and its rhetoric in a lecture addressing issues such as the emerging interest of 18th century English aristocracy in both classical antiquity and in defining the profile of the modern gentleman, and the role of visual arts in coding such complex messages.
