The exhibition is dedicated to the art from the Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521) period, marking 500 years since his death. Proposing an unusual reading of his cultural work, the exhibition highlights the complex personality of the voivode, author of the first literary writing conceived in Romania: "Neagoe Basarab's teachings to his son Theodosie", founder of the Monastery of Curtea de Argeș, supporter of an artistic patronage campaign, whose traces can be seen to this day, all over the world.

The display revolves around icons, commissioned by Neagoe Basarab five centuries ago and restored for this exhibition. The icons complete the unique ensemble of frescoes of the monastery from Curtea de Argeș, part of the MNAR patrimony, and illustrate the high standards of the painting school in Wallachia from the beginning of the 16th century.

The exhibition scenography suggests the space invented by Neagoe Basarab's craftsmen and replicated in the great voivodship foundations in the Romanian space.
