DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Queen Mary and the Emergence of Modern Ceramics
in Greater Romania renders homage to a tasteful and sensitive Queen who fu
ll-heartedly supported the reinterpretation of Romanian folk art in a mode
rn key. The initiative enjoyed the unconditional support of major Romanian
artists such as Camil Ressu\, Nicolae Tonitza\, Ștefan Dimitrescu\, Petru
Remus Troteanu\, Gh. Ionescu-Doru\, and Nora Steriadi. They were among th
e collaborators of the very first urban ceramics workshops in Bucharest\,
Băneasa\, Turda\, and Satu-Mare.Ceramics produced in these centres share a
fresh interpretation of traditional motifs\; artists managed to lend thei
r creations a touching authenticity similar to that of folk art. Genuinely
respectful of craftsmanship and the true spirit of folk art\, they avoide
d all formal approach and developed a playful decorative vocabulary.\nAn e
